LAWRENCE P. AND LORRAINE M. MURPHY

MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Established 2008

Awarding Criteria:  Will be awarded to a deserving college-bound senior who has demonstrated the values of dedication, determination and a concern for others

This scholarship is given in memory of Lawrence P. and Lorraine M. Murphy. Larry was raised in a small rural community in Wisconsin. Lorraine was raised in a large city in Connecticut. In 1969, after a 22-year career in the military, Larry and Lorraine decided to make Chelmsford their permanent home. Together they brought four children into this world. All four graduated from Chelmsford High School. While different in many ways, Larry and Lorraine were of a like mind when it came to the responsibilities and values associated with “family” and “education”.

The responsibilities associated with raising a larger family meant that despite hard times, there was always food on the table and a roof over their heads. From the earliest days in their children’s lives they stressed the importance of a college education. Having all their children go to college was an obsession that ultimately became their greatest accomplishment. These values defined their lives and it is appropriate that these values be perpetuated through this scholarship.

The Lawrence P. and Lorraine M. Murphy Memorial Scholarship is to be awarded to a graduating senior who is going to college and who has three or more siblings.
