History
The
CHSAA scholarship program is part of its Endowment Fund
that was established in 1990. George Parkhurst (1932) donated
$1000 to begin the endowment concept for our association.
The initial purpose for the endowment was to establish
a method of supporting deserving Chelmsford High School
graduates with monetary awards to be used toward their
post-secondary education. The first general awards were
awarded in the Spring of 1991.
At
the 1991 Annual Meeting, George Parkhurst proposed the concept
of "special scholarships". These scholarships would be developed
by donations from individuals, an organization, a business
firm, or any other entity and would bear the name of the
person or organization being recognized by the particular
scholarship. Mr. Parkhurst also established the first "special
scholarship", which bears his name today.
At
the present time, the CHSAA continues to award two types
of scholarships, General and Designated(formally Special).
To support these scholarships, the endowment fund continues
to grow because of generous contributions of alumni, parents
and friends of Chelmsford Hish School.
Awarding Scholarships
All
Chelmsford High School graduating seniors and alumni are eligible
to apply for CHSAA general and designated scholarships. Students
are required to complete and submit an application to the selection
committee established by the CHSAA Board of Directors. The selection
committee reviews each application and awards the scholarships
based on established criteria for each.
The
scholarships are formally presented to the recipients at
an annual Awards Night presentation in the Spring of each
school year.
